We’ve put together a selection of SEO tips to help you understand what constitutes effective, organic search engine optimisation. Have a look at these search engine optimisation do’s and don’ts…

Search engine optimisation encompasses a number of complementary on-page and off-page tactics and many of them carry the same weight in terms of their contribution to a website’s optimisation potential.

DO…

… Focus On Your Readers’ Needs And Do Not Just Add Content For Search Engine Value

To get organic clicks you have to create content that motivates your target audience. The more clicks to your website and the longer people spend on it (reading interesting, valuable content), the more likely your pages are to be ranked. If you don’t follow any of the other SEO tips on this list, at least let this one stick.

… Maintain A Blog

Keep abreast of your industry trends and news: report it, comment on it, place your company within its context. Try and keep your content relevant and newsworthy and don’t be tempted to focus on specials and promotions. Give your online users access to free and unique information.

… Make Your Interactions Personal

Use employee names and executive quotes where appropriate. Let your readers know there are real people behind the brand. Speak directly to your users.

… Try And Include Longer Pieces Of Copy

Try and aim for a word count of at least 300 words per page, the longer the better. Go in-depth on your subject matter and use an authoritative voice. Shorter pages are not likely to get the same attention from search engines.

DON’T…

… Steal, Poach, Plagiarise Or Duplicate Content From Any Other Source

Everything you post should be original. If it is not original your website could be penalised, blacklisted or not indexed. If you do rely on other sources to inspire your content, why not include them at the end of your article? You could also link out to sources of additional information for readers who want to know more. Outbound links will add value to the page’s SEO value.

… Be Tempted To Use Unnatural Language Just To Include Keywords

Users do not want to read content that doesn’t make sense. Write for readers first, and then add your keywords.

… Try And Sell Anything In An Obvious Way

With content, be it web pages or blog articles, you are providing users with an online service. When they require the product or service you offer, they will be aware of your brand. If you are a credible source they feel they can turn to for information to help them make purchasing decisions. Blogging and content platforms are not always the most appropriate place for specials and promotions.
